Diving in Banco Chinchorro is an unequalled experience. Chinchorro is located 32 kilometers east from the coast of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Diving in Chinchorro is a "must" when visitng this magical place surrounded by waters of 3000 feet deep. It is approximately 30 miles long by 9 miles wide.

This reef is formed by three keys. 200 fishermen live in Centro key in a camp of houses rising from the water with stilts that they call palafitos. In Norte and Lobos keys wildlife abounds in species including alligators and different birds. In the sea: conchs, lobsters, sharks, eels, barracudas, pig fish, sardines and coral in a million shapes and sizes, of course.
Even thou Chinchorro is relatively isolated from modern world these days, it wasn't like that before, centuries ago it was in the middle of the way of Spanish Galleons some of which weren't so lucky when sailing these waters. More than 18 shipwrecks have been identified and some experts say there could be more than 50 ships lying on the bottom.
A visit to Chinchorro takes a day at least.
