At Xel-Ha they breed melipona (stingless) bees in the apiary. Cultivated by the ancient Mayas, the melipona bee's honey has been famous for its healing powers for centuries.
Bee cultivation is a valuable renewable resource with a positive environmental impact, that's why Xel-Ha created this marvelous apiary.
Twice a year, honey is harvested in a ceremony overseen by a Mayan priest. Offerings and thanks are given in a ritual that has remained intact over thousands of years. Xel-Ha is proud to conserve Mayan traditions and the Yucatan Peninsula's unique species.
