At the point of convergence of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico lies Holbox Island, a peaceful and tropical place that has luckily remained isolated from our civilization. Its enigmatic name means "black hole" in the Mayan language and it is separated from the north part of the Yucatan Peninsula by the Yalahau Lagoon.
Far from the great tourist complexes of the State of Quintana Roo, its territory furrowed by simple sand streets, and its edges harmoniously surrounded by green mangrove plants, this beautiful island is solely populated by fishermen, exotic birds, iguanas, bohemian visitors who venture into this dream and the wild vegetation that embraces them all.
Here, introspection and a renewed connection with nature easily find a place in the human psyche. In this context, Cuban writer Sandra Perez Lozano, owner of the Casa Sandra & Holistic Spa Hotel, collaborated with Julio Rojas, a brilliant Chilean scriptwriter, to organize the First International Workshop on Full-Length Film Scriptwriting of the Yucatan Peninsula in 2006. This course will be held from November 12th to the 25th and will be hosted by Sandra's hotel, which is a cozy and beautiful ecotourist property.
This workshop is oriented to experienced scriptwriters who wish to sharpen details, as well as novel writers who have in mind a story that deserves to be told but which, because of lack of technique or experience, has not emerged yet.
Julio Rojas, who will lecture, has already planted his seed in the minds of more than 300 Hispano-American creators, using a ''bio-systemic'' writing methodology that consists of treating situations and the elements that interact in them, like parts of a living organism, with the interdependence and complementariness implied by that process. To accomplish that objective, a construction by layers is followed from the core or center to the rind or cover, a pattern shown by Mother Nature in the creation of her own masterpieces: fruits, the trunks of trees, or even the human body.
Among the films that will be used for analysis are works like "Vertigo," directed by Alfred Hitchcock and script by Samuel A. Taylor, "The Pledge," directed by Sean Penn, script written by Jerzy Kromolowsky, as well as "Closer,'' whose director is Mike Nichols and whose script was written by Patrick Marber, among many others.
While this international workshop will be without a doubt interesting and is highly recommended, it will be necessary to follow it closely as it seeks to position Holbox as the Island of the Scripts. In addition, we hope that the impact of events like this is felt in all the arts in order to consolidate this beautiful island as a fortress for freedom of thought, artistic creation and defense of our environment, in opposition to mainstream society that seems to care about nothing but economic and political profits.
