Five days of intense golf will take place for the fifth time in Mexico, in the heart of the Riviera Maya. From February 24th to the 27th, the PGA Tour hosts its only golf event in Mexico, the 2011 Mayakoba Golf Classic. This magnificent tournament is played at El Camaleon Golf Course, part of the Fairmont Mayakoba hotel, in the vibrant destination of Playa del Carmen.
Take advantage of this great opportunity to see 132 of the world's best golfers, and the reigning champion, Cameron Beckman, who will be defending his crown at the fifth Mayakoba Golf Classic. Some of the participants for 2011 are John Daly, Fred Funk, Brian Gay, Jerry Kelly, Jose de Jesus Rodriguez, Efren Serna Jr., Esteban Toledo, and Mark Wilson, among many others.
The tournament is taking place at El Camaleon Golf Course, situated in the Mayakoba complex, a few miles north of the city of Playa del Carmen and about 35 miles south of Cancun. The golf course was designed and built by the great Greg Norman. It is 7039 yards long, set among lush tropical vegetation, mangroves, and next to the magnificent Caribbean coast. A course designed not just for the professional golfer, but for the entire public, the facilities include a Mayan-style club house, a practice area, and a driving range. El Camaleon made history in 2007, when it became the only official golf course of the PGA Tour outside of the United States and Canada.
During your trip to this area of southern Mexico, enjoy not just an important golf tournament, but the opportunity to explore this incredible region that features the best Mexican beaches, Mayan archeological sites like Tulum and Coba, refreshingly cool sinkholes (cenotes), spectacular parks like Xcaret, Xel-Ha and Xplor, along with many other natural attractions. During the tournament, the different rounds tee off in the morning, so you can have late afternoon and the evening to visit the area.
There are endless accommodation options near the tournament site, some of the best are the Fairmont Mayakoba and Rosewood Mayakoba hotels, both located in the elegant Mayakoba complex. The Royal in Playa del Carmen and the Gran Porto Real Resort and Spa are two other very luxurious options in Playa del Carmen.
The different types of tickets for this tournament are already available, and come in a wide variety of prices to suit all budgets. You can get day passes, tickets for the entire event, and also VIP tickets that provide access to exclusive areas. Children under 17 years old can enter for free if accompanied by a paying adult.
