Cancun is a city that offers many activities and sites to see. Its nightlife rivals those of the best party places in the world and it is without a doubt an iconic part of the party scene in Cancun. The most famous DJs, from Paul Van Dyk to Paul Oakenfold, have come here to spin their cuts, with artists such as Fergie and 50 Cent dropping the beats in this Caribbean paradise. All this is what Cancun's top entertainment venue, The City, offers. Always on the cutting edge of the clubber's scene, this club amongst clubs has brought something new to the dance floor. If you're into the high-powered action of fists flying, grappling and roundhouse kicks, don't miss Mayan Battle Championship, the Mixed Martial Arts event of the year.
This full contact sport allows the use of multiple styles of combat and defense. With gloved hands and combat normally taking place in a cage, this sport pits the fighters against each other in rounds that are only minutes long. The rules are for the most part limited to no headbutting, biting, elbowing, kicks to the groin or eye-gouging. It is a spectacle that harkens back to the days of the Greeks, who practiced an ancient form of unarmed, hand-to-hand combat called pankration.
There are 10 bouts in all, with two championship bouts: the welterweight fight between champion of the Mixed Martial Arts, Akbarh "El Caballero" Arreola against Matt Lagler and the heavyweight fight between Lloyd "Kadillac" Marshbanks against Cody Goodale.
If you're worried about getting a good seat, relax. The City is an immense three-floored club that has 9 bars and can accommodate up to 6,000 people. With top of the line 1,000,000 watt sound systems and 650 square feet of video screens, you are pretty much guaranteed an extremely intense experience.
Mayan Battle Championship will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2009 so if you're in town and want to add a little intensity to your visit, get your tickets now.
