On October 2006, the cosmopolitan Playa del Carmen city was the venue for the first film festival of the Riviera Maya, the Riviera Maya Underground Film Festival, an unprecedented event in the Mexican Caribbean. The festival (which is a totally free, non-profit event) gathered more than two thousand spectators who enjoyed the most recent and original trends in international cinema, as well as the innovations in cinematography and film language. The event also included workshops, lectures, concerts, and projections on the best movie screens of the city, flooding Playa del Carmen with a movie feel and turning it into a huge cinema paradise for five days.

This year, the Riviera Maya will receive the most outstanding and original productions by new and renowned filmmakers, presenting innovative works from all around the globe. For the second time, the Riviera Maya Underground Film Festival will be a forum where filmmakers, professionals, and audience can interact, discuss, and learn more about cinema.

Certainly, the Riviera Maya Underground Film Festival is a feast for all the cinephiles, both motion-picture fans and filmmakers. Auteurs and moviegoers, new wavers and amateur filmmakers will get together to share different points of views. This time, the Riviera Maya will host guests like Jonas Cuaron (son of director Alfonso Cuaron), who will show his first feature-length film. Likewise, the festival will receive artists like Diego Catano, leading actor of the award-winning "Temporada de Patos" (Duck Season) and "Watching it Rain," the winner of The Short Film Palme d'Or, the highest prize given to a competing short film at the Cannes Film Festival.

Like last year, the Riviera Maya Underground Film Festival will have a series of lectures for the public, given by both the jury and the special guests. There will be lectures by filmmakers like Oscar Urrutia and Armando Casas, president of the first film school of Latin America (the CUEC). During the festival, there will also be other activities such as the exhibition of films by Mexican universities and non-profit organizations as well as the screening of internationally recognized, award-winning short films. There will also be a workshop about music for the mass media, by Dulce Rodriguez, screenwriter, producer, musicologist, and researcher.
