Because of the countless number of attractions found in the area, Cancun and the Riviera Maya have become two of the most sought after destinations among travelers looking for fun-filled vacations. In terms of leisure activities, these destinations most often exceed travelers' expectations, due to their excellent tourism infrastructure and high standards of hospitality. The unique contrast between the white sandy beach and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea are a delight for those who take pleasure in spending long days on the beach working on that ''perfect'' tan.
The Riviera's cenotes (sinkholes) surrounded by lush tropical rain forests, the idyllic islands, and the flora and fauna of the region are a joy for eco-travelers. If you enjoy snorkeling or diving then visit the pristine coral reef, teeming with colorful fish, for a truly breathtaking experience.
The people of Puerto Morelos, Cancun and the whole Mexican Caribbean Coast are ready to welcome anglers with their traditional ''Mexican'' hospitality. Deep sea fishing is one of the most important attractions in the Riviera Maya and from the 23rd to the 26th of April, the vastly popular ''Cancun Billfish Classic'' will be held here, where amateur and experienced anglers alike will be competing for prize money totaling a staggering $470,000 USD. The Cancun Classic together with four other tournaments, make up the Mexico Deep Sea Fishing Circuit, organized by the International Gamefish Tournaments association (IGT), a prestigious promoter of international deep sea fishing tournaments all over the world.
The teams score points based on the verified release of each catch. Each team consists of five participants and the admission fee is $4,000 USD. The teams who place first and second get to enter the IGT Grand Championship, from December 10-13 this year. These two teams plus twelve others will compete for the $250,000 USD cash prize in a ''winner takes all'' event, broadcast on the major sports networks.
The event in Puerto Morelos promises to be a fantastic one, due to the variety and abundance of billfish and gamefish found off the coast of the Riviera Maya. Some of the most popular fish anglers can expect to catch are mahi-mahi, blue and white marlins, king mackerel, sailfish, tuna and wahoo. This abundance of fish comes as no surprise, when you consider that the Mexican Caribbean Sea boasts the second longest barrier reef in the world, unique not only in beauty, but also for the great diversity of plant and marine species that inhabit the area.
Hosting this splendid event is the luxurious Hotel Marina El Cid Spa and Beach Resort in Puerto Morelos, the only resort in the Riviera Maya to feature its own marina, in which they can accommodate up to 120 small yachts and cabin cruisers. Among its most notable features, the hotel boasts a state of the art sport fishing fleet, a dive shop, a meteorological station, a mini-supermarket; hardware, bait and tackle shops, a self-service laundry and more. The unbeatable quality of the restaurants and bars at Hotel Marina El Cid Spa and Beach Resort, as well as its comfortable, luxurious guestrooms and first-class hospitality, is sure to please not only the anglers participating in the tournament but also all the guests staying at the hotel, especially those fond of this exciting sport.
