Cancun Sport Fishing has a shorter history than in the rest of the region. Traditional fishing was performed by the Mayas in Yucatan for a long time before Cancun existed. At the end of the Second World War some U.S. war veterans started to practice Sport Fishing in Cancun as a sport where they combined meditation with muscle tonification. The activity became very popular in the southern states because they were the favorite retreat for the war pensioners.
The closeness with the Mexican Caribbean and the richness of its waters
attracted these peculiar visitors in longer stays every year. They taught their
techniques to traditional fishermen in Boca Paila who became the first Sport
Fishing guides when Cancun was founded in 1970.
In the last years, fishing in Riviera Maya has reached its highest peak. Anglers from all different parts of the world come year after year to practice this amusing sport. |
