Discover the hidden world of Cenote Dos Ojos and immerse yourself in the crystalline waters of a limestone sinkhole, or collapsed cavern roof revealing an underwater river, unique to the Yucatan. This amazing geological formation is more than 6,000 years old and consists of meandering passages flooded with fresh water of which only 38 miles have been explored and mapped. Swimming in a cenote is an opportunity that you can't miss out on when in the Riviera Maya!
This underground wonder, which appeared on the IMAX film "Journey into Amazing Caves", is among the ten largest cave systems in the world. It is the longest explored and mapped cave system in Quintana Roo, measuring about 387 feet long. It is located south of Playa del Carmen and north of Tulum, so it is definitely worth visiting during your trip in the Riviera Maya.
It is an ideal experience for small groups or couples who wish to explore this natural wonder. The caves are quite safe and there is a boardwalk at the entrance. Some trails are recommended for beginners and others for the more experienced divers, and the water is cool, with temperatures ranging between 75 and 77 degrees F.
So, by all means, don't leave the Riviera Maya without exploring Cenote Dos Ojos!
