Visitors are advised to arrive at Xcaret Park before 5:30 p.m. on May 22nd to visit the interactive Mayan market, a recreation of a Pre-Hispanic trading port. We recommend that you hold on to the cacao beans that will be given out at the entrance to the park, as they can be used as currency to trade for traditional items, such as shells, corn, feathers, fruit and honey, among others.
Afterwards, you can attend the Inauguration of the Sacred Mayan Journey 2015, with fascinating dances and Mayan rituals, including lighting the Fire of Creation, honoring the Bonfire of the Three Stones, and blessing the turtles that will be used as offerings.
With the first rays of the sun on May 22nd, the Bataoobs (local chiefs), together with a Mayan priest, will lead the blessing ceremony and the farewell to the oarsmen who will paddle their canoe through the defiant waters of the Caribbean Sea to the island of Kuzamil (Cozumel). The oarsmen are expected to arrive around 1:00 p.m. in the cove of Chankanaab Park.
If you have the opportunity to travel by ferry to Cozumel on the same day, you can attend a ceremony given by an oracle that is scheduled to take place promptly at 8:00 p.m., during which the oarsmen will present their dances and receive messages of peace and harmony from the goddess Ixchel.
Finally, on May 23rd, the villagers of Cozumel bid farewell to the oarsmen, who cross the open sea once more, returning back to where they started in Playa del Carmen to complete the Sacred Mayan Journey. At Xcaret Park there will be music and dancing to celebrate this ancient Mayan tradition that represents the welcoming of a new and improved era.
Be part of the Sacred Mayan Journey 2015 and enjoy a unique experience that will remain etched in your mind forever!
