This natural marvel is a complex ecosystem where nature and time work in perfect harmony. The coral reefs are structures or colonies of rocky formations made up of coral, which are microscopic organisms, similar to the anemones, that create a calcium carbonate skeleton around themselves, creating a cup-like shape. Every colony can take up to a thousand years to form.

The reefs are home to a variety of marine flora and fauna. About 25% of life in the sea forms a part of this ecosystem. The structure of a reef system is extremely complex, in comparison to a tropical jungle, and functions as a natural barrier to protect the coastline from the effects of erosion, the current and hurricanes.

Due to its more than 1,500 square miles of territory, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia is considered the largest in the world, followed by the Great Maya Reef. The latter is located in the warm waters of the Caribbean, nestled between the shores of Quintana Roo, Honduras, Guatemala and Belize, going on for a length of over 600 miles.

The crystal clearness of the waters of Quintana Roo allow the light to shine through, an important factor for the development of the reef. Every year, this area receives an endless flow of visitors from all over the world, who are eager to see the incredible beauty of these reefs. Five hundred different species of fish, mollusks and crustaceans, plus 65 different varieties of coral, have been documented in this reef.
CoralThe preservation of the biodiversity of the reefs is absolutely paramount. Its fragile structure can suffer severe damage cause by global warming, pollution and by mankind.
